Program FAQ

How many residents are in the program?
The program has 2 categorical positions for the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years.

Do the residents have mentors?
Yes, each resident will have a clinical mentor and a research mentor.

Who does the teaching in our program?
Classes during the MSCI will be taught by faculty of the Graduate School of Health Sciences. Most didactic lectures in resident seminars will be led by UMMC or invited faculty. Residents will also participate in providing lectures and leading discussions. Faculty and residents will lead journal club. And invited lecturers will present at population health grand rounds.

Is there structured call?
In general, there is no call in a preventive medicine residency. On occasion, during an event (e.g. an outbreak, a disaster response), residents will work altered work schedules of 12-14 hours a day for a short period of time (e.g. two weeks). Residents will have most evening and weekends off to study, prepare for classes, and have personal leisure time.

Do residents meet individually with the program leadership?
Yes, the program director will meet semi-annually to review performance progress and milestone evaluations. In addition, the program director will meet at least every other month with residents to discuss any issues that might arise. Of note, the program director will have an open door policy to talk with residents as needed.

What is the average patient volume in clinics?
Residents in the PGY-2 year are anticipated seeing 4-5 patients per clinical half/day and PGY-3 residents are expected to see 5-6 patients per clinical half/day.

How much vacation time does a resident receive annually?
Residents have three weeks of vacation time each year with additional days off during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.

Will I be able to attend conferences?
Yes, residents are given up to five days a year to attend conferences. PGY-2 residents are encouraged to attend the Mississippi Public Health Association annual meeting and the Mississippi Medical Association annual meeting. Registration fees will be paid for these meetings by the program. During the PGY-3 year, residents will be encouraged to attend the annual meeting of the American College of Preventive Medicine. Reasonable expenses for registration and travel to this meetings will be compensated by the program.

What other activities will I be expected to complete?
Residents will be expected to participate in research through the MSCI and quality improvement and patient safety projects through UMMC. Other learning experiences will be identified throughout the year.
